This was seen as a major cultural revolution by white America because black people were allowed to dance together and express themselves freely. After the swing dance craze of the 1930s, swing dancing was brought back to the mainstream in the 1990s thanks to movie musicals such as "Singing' in the Rain". In response, thousands of new swing dancers formed throughout America. Today, swing remains a popular social dance with a vibrant community of artists and educators. In the 1930s, two early swing moves were created in the Thirties among African American communities in California and New York. Billed as an athletic activity rather than a dance, cutting contests were held where dancers would compete to see who could create the most imaginative moves.
